Reflecting on his time shaping Captain America for the screen for the first time (really the last iconic hero who got a film), Chris Evans told British magazine Glamour that he may be done after his contract is up. Evans is signed for another single Cap film and then the Avengers 2 and 3 that will also finish Robert Downey Jr.’s contract. Evans, in a reflective mood says, right now, he’d like to take a break from acting altogether when that happens.
So what does that mean? Not much. RDJ said exactly this after Iron Man 3 came out and he was tired and, quite frankly, negotiating for a new contract. Evans is paid MASSIVELY less than RDJ. He just finished Cap 2 and went right from that into shooting the sequel to the Avengers which is ongoing. He’s got to be exhausted so the idea of taking a break is probably pretty appealing. When it comes time to though, will he? I don’t know. I do know Disney will pay him pretty much what he wants. That is, unless, they decide with both Evans and RDJ saying they’re done it’s time to recast the major roles. Quotes from Evans after the break. Captain America The Winter Soldier Opens in just a month: April 4, 2014.
“I think when I’m done with this Marvel contract, I’ll take a little break from acting, with acting, you’re one piece in a very big puzzle. It’s like you helped buy a gift but you don’t know what the gift is, so you come back and see the movie. Sometimes it’s nice, sometimes it’s tragic. This process [directing], you’re involved in every single decision. If I hadn’t done it, I’d be really kicking myself. At the time, it was a daunting task for a number of reasons, but in hindsight it was the right move.”
“He doesn’t have demons. He’s not Batman, he doesn’t struggle with inner turmoil. The nature of this character is that he puts himself last and helps the common good. So he could easily slip into a world of boredom, The blessing and curse of Captain America is that he doesn’t have that fancy an ability. He doesn’t live in another world, or turn green. He doesn’t have bells and whistles, he doesn’t shoot missiles. He punches and kicks.”
