The Road to Captain America: Civil War (Amazing Super Cut!)

The MCU Exchange has put together a fantastic super cut trailer that shows how the plot lines that will explode in Captain America: Civil War have been slowly converging over the course of the first two phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  It’s a fantastic tribute, really, to the plotting and pre-planning that has made the MCU such a success and the lack of it has caused the DC Cinematic Universe to barely get off the ground.  There are just as many pieces in play in Captain America: Civil War as there are in Batman vs. Superman, if not more.  However, I’m not worried at all about Civil War, and I’m dreading BvS.

The Russo Brothers have proven themselves with Cap 2, and the MCU has proven itself time and again.  I hear a lot of blowback on Age of Ultron online, but the movie was good.  Was it the best MCU film?  No.  Do you realize how high that bar is now?  AOU, I think was wrongly anticipated to be a climax like the first Avengers film was.  In reality, it was much more like Iron Man 2 in that it established several other movies, moved the story along and served as a pivot.  I think Civil War is actually the movie that people thought AOU was going to be, because this is the one that will change things forever.  I know that’s tried and true comic book hype, but it’s accurate.  The MCU as we know it will cease to exist after Civil War hits on May 3, 2016.

Top 5: Avengers Most Likely to Die in Civil War

Captain America: Civil War, Captain America, Iron Man

War is coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as we are months away from the next installment in the series – Captain America: Civil War.  In case you haven’t attended a movie within the last six months, here’s the trailer to get you to speed:

There WILL be casualties in Civil War.  We know this from Marvel and we know that multiple death scenes have been filmed with multiple characters to keep us all confused.  That being said, I think there will be a huge death, and probably a supporting character death in the film.  The supporting character cast at Marvel is so large know that you could speculate endlessly (though my money would be on William Hurt’s Thunderbolt Ross unless they plan on bringing the Red Hulk into the MCU any time soon).  If you have not read the graphic novel, or know nothing about the story, this is going to get spoilery, so bail. Last warning.  Here are my top 5 most likely candidates for a big death: Continue reading Top 5: Avengers Most Likely to Die in Civil War

Trailer Time: Captain America – Civil War Trailer #1 *Divided We Fall*

So Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. walked onto the set of Jimmy Kimmel Live! last night with a HUGE surprise.  Marvel has released the first full trailer for Captain America: Civil War and, oh my holy nerd!  May 6, 2016, people, Phase 3 of the MCU starts with a bang (and if that weren’t enough we finally get Spidey and Black Panther!).  Official poster and synopsis below.  Oh, go ahead, watch it again (Lord knows I did).  Happy Thanksgiving, geeks!!!

Captain America, Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans

Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War finds Steve Rogers leading the newly formed team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. But after another incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability, headed by a governing body to oversee and direct the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers, resulting in two camps—one led by Steve Rogers and his desire for the Avengers to remain free to defend humanity without government interference, and the other following Tony Stark’s surprising decision to support government oversight and accountability. Get ready to pick a side and join the nonstop action playing out on two fronts when Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War opens in U.S. theaters on May.

Chris Evans Sticking Around After Cap 3? Captain America 3 Rumors!

Captain America The Winter Soldier, Captain America, Steve Rogers, Chris Evans

The rumor mill has had Chris Evans wanting  out of the MCU when his contract is up, but in doing press for the Blu Ray release of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Evans doesn’t sound like a guy ready to retire.

“Who’s handing off the shield? Don’t take my job from me prematurely dude. I’m sure it’ll happen at some point, all good things have to come to an end. But I’m really happy playing the character.”

Evans, more than any other member of the MCU cast has been filming his part pretty much non-stop since filming began on Captain America: The First Avenger, and I think he’s probably exhausted.  That certainly would play a role in musings about retirement.  The Russo Brothers have said Cap 3 will end Steve Rogers’ story and Evans sounds excited about bringing it to the screen.

“It’s this giant web of plot, where everything is connected to everything else… that’s the beautiful thing and especially for the fanboys who understand these plotlines. With Cap 3, we’re going to continue this excitement… Marvel doesn’t disappoint. Whatever you’re hoping for, you’re probably going to get.”

Captain America 3 will be the second film of Phase 3 of the MCU (Ant-Man being #1).  It sounds like from this article from Crave that it will be just as game changing as the second film was if not more so.  It also sounds like we’re going to get an official title very soon.

Crave Online recently had the chance to talk to Joe and Anthony Russo about the upcoming third film that they’re developing. One of the first things they are asked about is the title, apparently it’s been in place for awhile and they hope that they get to announce it soon. Joe said,

“If you’ve been talking to Kevin [Feige, President of Marvel Studios] the title has been in place probably for ten years in his brain. It’s all part of the road map that he’s laid out, and it’s all part of the bigger plan.”

The direction the studio is taking this character has been planned out from the beginning. It’s not like they are just coming up with this stuff now. Marvel knows where the characters’ arcs in their universe are going. Joe explains,

“Yeah, I think the way Kevin does it is there are big pieces that he knows he wants to build towards, but the way that you get there is open to interpretation and improv a little bit. That’s defined by who gets involved with the project, the writers and directors involved in the project. The big thing we knew we had to deal with in Cap 2 was the fall of Hydra. Similarly there is a very, very big idea at the center of Cap 3. But how we get there is all up to us. And I think why Marvel has been so successful is because it’s been such a clear plan, that everything is interconnected and they’re building emotional capital with each movie that you can then trade off of in the next film.”

The Winter Soldier, Bucky Barnes, Sebastian Stan

When asked about the those set pieces and if the villain and other characters in the story are a part of that big set piece, Joe said,

“No, all that stuff is open for interpretation. Usually it’s just one big idea that alters the universe as a whole in some way, that has interconnectedness that he’s grabbed on to. That’s the case with Cap 3, but as far as villain and story arc and tone, all that stuff is left up to us.”

I thought that TWS was the strongest Marvel movie to-date and I am just as excited about Cap 3 as I am Avengers 2.  We can speculate all we want, but Marvel’s six years ahead of us, so they know what they’re doing here.  They’ve just spoiled us now to the point where we want more NOW!  Captain America 3 will release in May 2016 (that’s a long way from NOW).

Steve Rogers Story Will End in Cap 3! Will There Be a New Cap?

Captain America The Winter Solider

There have long been rumblings that Chris Evans wants to retire from the MCU, maybe even acting, after his contract is up.  He’s contracted for two more Avengers films and Captain America 3, which is already scheduled for 2016.  The Russo Brothers are returning to direct the third film, which is fantastic news after they delivered, in my opinion, the best Marvel movie yet.  In making press round promoting the Blu Ray release of The Winter Soldier, they talked a little about Cap 3.  (Though they did not address the rumors coming from Jeremy Renner that Hawkeye will be in the third Cap film.)

The first draft of the script is done, we will be seeing The Winter Soldier again, and they basically said that Caps 2 &3 could be looked at as two halves of a larger arc that leaves things open for the shield to be passed.  There’s a history of people other than Steve being Cap (in fact Sam Wilson – Falcon – is about to become Cap in the comics).  Transitioning to a new Cap is going to be a lot easier than transitioning to a new Iron Man.

With Iron Man and some of the characters that will be much more difficult to recast, I think you’ll see them transition off the revolving membership of the Avengers and fade to the background for a while as other Phase 2 and Phase 3 characters step forward.  This will allow Marvel time to retool, recast and reintroduce the core characters down the line.  The full article and comments from the Russos is below.  Captain America 3 is currently scheduled for a May 6, 2016 release.
