Top 5: Movies From Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 2

Guardians of the Galaxy, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Star Lord, Gamora

With this weekend’s release, Ant-Man (review coming soon) brings to a close the second phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  This grand experiment in creating a shared media experience to mirror that of the comics has now spanned 12 films and three television series.  If the theme of the first phase was “Origin”, the theme of the second phase was “Expansion”.  Everything got bigger in Phase Two from the stakes to the literal size of the Marvel Universe as we were introduced to its cosmic aspect.  Captain America: Civil War will kick off the third phase, which I think we can safely say is going to be themed “Explosion”.  Things are about to get very dark for our heroes, so perhaps it’s appropriate that a light-hearted film like Ant-Man closes chapter two.

1. Captain America: The Winter Soldier

2. Guardians of the Galaxy

3. Thor: The Dark World

4. Avengers: Age of Ultron

5. Ant-Man

My Favorite Scene: Thor The Dark World (2013) “Presto Chango Loki”

Of the franchises that make up the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I think my favorite (and I never would have thought this prior to the films’ release) is Thor.  I had no idea how they were going to take this guy with a winged helmet speaking in Shakespearean dialogue who lives in a magical castle at the end of a rainbow bridge and not make it utterly ridiculous.  Kenneth Brannagh set the tone with the first film and poked just enough fun at it so we weren’t taking it too seriously, but at the same time back-dooring the gravitas and richness of Asgard and regality of the characters so that when you needed the dramatic moment, it had the foundation required. MCU Phase 2 Supercut!

It’s been awhile since we had a good supercut and editor Adrian Conion showcases the movies that comprise the second phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Irom Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy and the upcoming Avengers: Age of Ultron.  After a weak start with Iron Man 3, the increasing quality, complexity and maturity of these films has me absolutely fired up for Avengers 2 and Phase 3!

POLL RESULTS: What is the Best Marvel Movie?

After a month of frenzied voting, the Killing Time Community’s pick for Best Marvel Movie is the film that began it all: 2008’s Iron Man.  It was not an easy win for the grandpappy of Marvel films.  Battling it to the wire was Marvel’s latest film: Guardians of the Galaxy.  Right behind those two was this year’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier.  Finishing between the top 3 and a gaggle of votes for every other film was 2012’s The Avengers.  Even though the original still sits atop the throne, the fact that the last two Marvel movies finished right behind it, should prove that six plus years into the Marvel movie-verse, things are just getting better and better.

Just a reminder to vote in the Best Marvel Movie Poll.  With a few days to go, four movies are battling it out for #1.  Someone also might throw Iron Man 2 a pity vote….   At any rate, vote at http://justkillingti.me.  The winner will be announced around Labor Day.
