Movie Review: Mr. Holmes (2015) *McKellan’s Masterpiece*

Sherlock Holmes is one of the greatest creations in all of fiction.  Like the best characters, he’s been interpreted on the page, stage, screen and currently stars in one of the best shows to grace TV in years under the stewardship of Benedict Cumberbatch.  You would think that with so many tales of his adventures that nothing new was left to be done with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s master detective, but you would be wrong.  Mr. Holmes tells a tale of Sherlock that we’ve never seen before, and thanks to a cunning script, deft direction and a performance for the ages by Ian McKellan, 2015 has another perfect film.

Here’s one to look forward to this summer!  Ian McKellan plays an aged Sherlock Holmes in the 1940’s, trying to solve the one case that’s eluded him his entire career.  It’s directed by Chicago’s Bill Condon and stars Milo Parker and Laura Linney.  No firm US release date has been announced past it being slated for Summer 2015.  Arthur Conan Doyle’s detective remains one of the most versatile and endlessly fascinating characters in all of fiction, and I can’t wait to see McKellan add this to his already distinguished career. Mr. Holmes opens wide on July 19, 2015.
