Villain for Guardians of the Galaxy Confirmed; Cap 2 Plot Update *SPOILERS*

Ronan the Accuser, Ronan, Guardians of the Galaxy, Jon C. Reily

New details on the next two Marvel movies after Thor.  Ronan is a fantastic character and will bring the Kree into the MCU, plus more THANOS!  I think Cap 2 is shaping up to be the most pivotal film in Phase 2 pre-Avengers 2…

“Ronan The Accuser WILL be the film’s lead villain and Thanos will indeed play a large role in the overall scheme of things. In terms of iconic locations, The Guardians will operate out of their base of operations, called Knowhere, a space station with the ability to teleport throughout the universe. Lastly, our source confirmed that there would be no members of THE AVENGERS featured in the film, but that it does take place in the same time/universe as the current phase of films.”

Captain America, Cap 2, Captain America The Winter Solider, SHIELD, Chris Evans

“This is pretty much a sequel to THE AVENGERS and plays the biggest role in leading into THE AVENGERS 2. In addition, the sequel will go more in-depth on Black Widow’s back story and gadgetry.”

Benicio Del Toro Joins the Guardians of the Galaxy

Guardians of the Galaxy

Benicio Del Toro has signed on for next year’s Guardian’s of the Galaxy.  Not only for G of G, Del Toro signed a mulit-picture deal to play a major player in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  Who it could be is wide open to speculation.  The team seems pretty set with Starlord (Chris Pratt), Rocket Raccoon, Groot, Gamora (Zoe Saldana), and Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista).  He could voice Groot or Rocket but that seems a waste of an Oscar nominated actor.  Could he be Thanos?  We do know that John C. Reily has signed up as roughly the Agent Coulson equivalent of the cosmic arm of the MCU and that Glenn Close has signed to play the head of the Nova Corps (Marvel’s answer to the Green Lanterns).

With this having the smallest built-in audience of any picture in phase two, Marvel is being smart and going out and getting name stars to fill these roles.  I’m extremely excited and intrigued to see how this is going to come together.  For a primer on the Guardians of the Galaxy, click on the link and check the piece I did awhile back.  Guardians of the Galaxy will rocket (punny) its way into theaters in April 2014.

Update on Thor 2 Director Controversy and More Photos

Thor, Thor 2, Thor 2 The Dark World, Alan Taylor, Chris Hemsworth, Marvel

A few days ago, we first got word of trouble with post-production on Thor 2: The Dark World between Marvel and director Alan Taylor and composer Carter Burwell. Since then, Burwell has been fired from the project (hopefully clearing way for Thor composer Patrick Doyle to return), but as to the exact nature of the friction between Taylor and Marvel, the following comes from Latino Review:

Taylor was apparently butting heads with [Marvel President Kevin Feige] over the run time and final edit. Taylor wants the film to be 2 and a half hours, Marvel says he’s contracted to give them a 2 hour film and he’s breaching his contract. He hasn’t been fired, but editing has stopped for 2 weeks while both parties take some time to cool off before a mediator will be brought in [the] middle of June. Bottom line is that the film is only 5 months from release and a decision is going to have to be made soon especially if re-shoots are required.

If true, this is so dumb that it is all I can do not to take mighty Mjolnr myself and….well, do nothing because I am not worthy to wield it, but you get the rage vector.  American audiences can handle a film that’s 2.5 hours long if it is GOOD.      The last time there was a controversy like this, it was over The Incredible Hulk, which had a good 30 minutes hacked out of its final cut.  I like the Norton Hulk, but I get why he was so angry (Hulk smash) because if you watch the deleted scenes on the Blu Ray, they would have made it a better film, taking it from a 7.5 – 8.0 theatrical to a hard 9.0.  Also, The Avengers is 2 hours and 23 minutes and that seemed to work out okay for Marvel.  If the story warrants the length, Marvel needs to back the hell off.  As one of the four people on earth who was disappointed by Iron Man 3, I really am looking to Thor 2 to get the second phase of the MCU underway.  Two stumbles in a row would really derail the momentum Marvel’s built.  Thor: The Dark World is scheduled for a November 2013 release.

New Photos From Thor: The Dark World and Rumored Director Issues

I hadn’t heard a peep of a problem with Alan Taylor prior to this so I hope it’s not true. This is one of my must-see films for the fall. I actually am fine with Burwell off the product. I’m not a fan of his work and I thought Paddy Doyle’s score for the first Thor film was the best, by far, of any Marvel movie to date.

Phwoar! Thor!

Photos of Thor from Empire magazine. Possible issues with the director. Blah blah. Photos of Thor. Movie synopsis about Nine Realms and an ancient race plunging the universe into darkness or some shit like that. Yada yada yada. And photos of THOR!

Only two photos & he’s fully clothed, though. No photos of Thor in his underwear. If I had a photo of that, I promise I’d post it. 🙂

Saoirse Ronan Talks Scarlet Witch Rumors

For the record, I think this would be fantastic casting. This is a really, really difficult part to cast and she is a fantastic actress. I hope they can get her in Avengers Tower.

Confessions of a Nerf Herder

With it being reported a few weeks ago that the Scarlet Witch and brother Quicksilver would be appearing in The Avengers 2, it was also noted that Marvel’s apparent blue-print for the Scarlet Witch character was Saoirse Ronan. Well, Roman has now addressed these stories.

Speaking to The Mary Sue, the actress said, “I have heard about it and yes, I would. Yeah, of course I would. I love Joss [Whedon] and I love those films, and I love his handle on them and how he portrayed these kinds of superheroes. I think it’s very different from what anyone else has done. So yeah, I’d love to be in it.”

At the moment, the only thing official is that the Scarlet Witch, not to mention Quicksilver, will definitely be in The Avengers 2. With Marvel seeing Ronan as the perfect fit for the character, and now her…
