Synopsis: Lara Croft is the fiercely independent daughter of an eccentric adventurer who vanished when she was scarcely a teen. Now a young woman of 21 without any real focus or purpose, Lara navigates the chaotic streets of trendy East London as a bike courier, barely making the rent. Determined to forge her own path, she refuses to take the reins of her father’s global empire just as staunchly as she rejects the idea that he’s truly gone. 1. Saw a couple of minutes of Warcraft today. Can it really be called a video game movie “curse” if the movies are all just really, really crummy?

      1. I know Dave, but it’s like when Homer Simpson wished for a turkey sandwich, and the way the wish ironically backfired was that the turkey was a little dry.

I object to a curse being invoked to explain the so-called creative decisions of apathetic Hollywood executives.

      2. Oh it’s their fault that they can’t figure out how to translate successful narratives from one media format to another. At this point, that’s just stupidity.

      3. If only the odd numbered Star Trek movie thing could be figured out. THAT you can call a curse, because there was no rhyme or reason. It just happened. The video game movie thing is probobly not stupidity at all. I have seen some of these modern games and they could not be more cinematic. Obviously no one in la la land CARES about making good video game movies. No one in power, anyway. I’m sure if you put someone like GDT in charge of one he could crack the nut.

      4. Yes I know the ST curse was broken I meant it’s impossible to figure out WHY the odd numbered films were all terrible. JJ made his reboot, and it worked, yet we still know nothing. After Into Darkness and Beyond, maybe it will all be moot. Maybe they will all be subpar from now on.

IW was ten years in the making, and people love it. All those things I said about audiences possibly getting worn out by the relentlessness of the action, by the hugeness of the movie… I was so, so wrong. Everyone I talk to loves the hugeness. The hugeness is the biggest selling point of the movie. I should have seen that. There are two dozen superheroes in it, for the love of God, and it’s half of the ENTIRE UNIVERSE they’re fighting for.

At a marco level (because my personal conversations with people are hardly scientific) movies do not perform this way without incredible word of mouth.

The narrative about Solo seems to have changed. Apparently it’s hugely anticipated now, breaking presale records, ect. Disney starts trotting it out next week. They would be hiding it from the critics and the public if Alden Ehrenreich was THAT bad. Right? This is what I’m telling myself, anyway. The Twentieth Century’s defining myth is at stake here. This movie HAS to be good. The original Star Wars movies must NOT get buried under some callous Disney corporate thing. But it could happen very easily.
