Gal Gadot in Wonder Woman

In Theaters This Week (6/02/2017): Wonder Woman, Captain Underpants

Captain Underpants

Each Thursday we look at what is going to be coming out in theaters this weekend, show you the trailers for the big releases, predict the box office winner and just generally give you enough of a carrot to pull you through the rest of the work week.  June dawns with the best-reviewed DC movie since The Dark Knights….and Captain Underpants.  This isn’t a choice, people.

Wonder Woman, Gal Gadot

Since the debut of the DC Extended Universe in 2013, only three films have actually been released, all of which have been divisive to some extent with fans.  Who would have thought that it might be Wonder Woman who would kick the shared universe into gear (and hopefully Justice League will keep the momentum going in November)?  Having no real cultural footprint other than the Lynda Carter 1970’s campy TV series, starring an actress that has never carried a film, Wonder Woman is currently sitting at 93%, and that’s good news for comic fans and the prospect of getting more female heroes  their own movies (Marvel?  Why is there no Black Widow movie….still???).

Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie (Kevin Hart, PG, 1hr 24m)

Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, PG-13, 2hr 25min)

KT picked Pirates 5 to easily dominate Alien: Covenant (which dropped a whopping 70% in its second weekend.  Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales opened with over $300 million globally and $62.6 million stateside.  Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues to hang around, passing over $800 million internationally and taking in another $20.6 million finishing second for the weekend.
(2017 Prediction Record: 18-4; Lifetime prediction record 56-9).

Wonder Woman was on track for an opening in the $65 – $85 million range before the glowing reviews started flooding in, and that’s just going to bring out even more people curious about a hero who most people are aware of, but don’t have a definitive experience with.  I have a feeling that’s going to change when the receipts are counted at weekend’s end.  Bravo to DC for getting things back on track (knock on wood).
