Thor 3 Moving Forward as Part of MCU Phase 3…..Will it be Ragnarok? *Possible Spoilers*

Both Captain America 3 and Thor 3 will be part of Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  While official announcements are forthcoming, work is already moving forward to secure the Russos to return to direct Cap 3 and now HitFix is reporting that Marvel has hired Craig Kyle and Chris Yost (veteran Marvel writers) to pen the script for Thor 3.  The same source reports that the plot for Thor 3 will be the Ragnarok storyline and it will be teased at the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron.

If you’re not up on your Norse mythology, Ragnarok is essentially the apocalypse.  Here’s a good summation from the article: Ragnarok is an apocalypse of sorts that represents the end of Asgard. Ragnarok is an apocalyptic-battle that the Realm of Asgard has experienced over and over and over again. Ragnarok is a cycle of death and rebirth. It comes in cycles, randomly killing gods and restoring new gods with no knowledge of what took place. This is happening in an effort to sustain Those Who Sit Above in Shadow, which are celestial beings that are the gods of gods. They need this cycle to continue in order to survive. Thor is eventually made aware of this cycle and it pisses him off, because it robs his people of their glory and memory. Thor vows to restore his people’s glory by ending the cycle. This will require Thor to form an alliance with his arch-nemesis Surtur.  In Norse Mythology and in Marvel Comics there are fallen warriors called the Einherjar, who spend their death feasting and continually fighting. They are waiting for the day of the Ragnarok where they can fight for Asgard once again.

Thor The Dark World, Thor 2, Asgard

With Loki now ruling Asgard, will he bring about Ragnarok by waging war between Earth and Asgard, forcing Thor to choose between his two homes?  Will Marvel use a Ragnarok storyline to kill off the Asgardians since the storyline resurrects them and they could be easily explained as looking different if reborn.  It seems a little soon for that, but when they do need to recast this corner of the MCU, Ragnarok is a pretty nifty way to do it and come back with a new cast.

Craig Kyle has had involvement with the previous Thor films and he’s talked before about what he envisioned for a third Thor film.

“This is Hall of Science again, another place you’re going to see today. This is gonna be a pretty neat spot that we actually get to explore, which will go into the various breakthroughs and discoveries of the Asgardians where you’ll see functioning models of the Big Bang and all these wonderful technologies that no human has ever laid eyes on before.
“And inside’s gonna be this living tree, which we believe is connected to Yggdrasil, the cosmic tree. And the effects and woes and success of the universe are spoken through this, this living object. So, should the end of all things ever come this would probably be the first thing to fall. And we have a really tremendous scene in here with Thor and Odin.”
When “The end of all things” was brought up, Kyle was asked if he was talking about Ragnarok and he replied,

“It’s one of the bigger stories, right? [LAUGHS] So, who knows? [LAUGHS]“

The Infinity Gauntlet
So this is the answer to all the riddles…

Tough to make much from that, but what we do see is Phase 3 starting to come into shape with probable announcements on the remaining films no later than ComicCon.  Here’s a rough guess (totally my own):
2015 – Ant-Man
2016 – Dr. Strange, Captain America 3
2017 – Thor 3, Black Panther
2018 – Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Avengers: Infinity Gauntlet
That’s based on educated guesses and speculation so we’ll see how it ends up matching reality.  The next MCU film is Captain America: The Winter Soldier and it will open April 4, 2014.

  1. Marvel could presell me tickets all the way through to 2018 right now – a proper “shut up and take my money” moment. Loving the MCU so far and hope they follow your proposed line-up leading to Avengers 3!

    1. Well, in that case I definitely think Marvel should lock that in and I’ll start taking commission. It seems the most likely to me based on where I know those projects are in development and we’re supposed to get two new single characters not counting Ant-Man and Strange and BP look the most ready. I can’t wait for Cap 2. By all accounts it’s going to lead directly into Age of Ultron.
